Biography

Prof. BalKrishna Pokharel
- Retired Professor of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1933 : Born in Chisapani Gadhi, then famous as a district head-quarter of Chisapani. Here was a check-post seeking gate-pass for entering and outgoing travelers. The gate-pass was called Rahadani. Even Nepalese natives could not enter Kathmandu valley without producing gate-pass here.

Father: Late Subba Sharada Prasad Pokharel, then Judge of the district.

Mother: Late Chhaya Devi Pokharel, with no literacy.

1933-1956: Became a short- period resident of district head-quarters like Piuthan, Pokhara, Chautara, BIratnagar, Palpa and Kathmandu respectively as late Subba Sharada Prasad was transfered from one district to another.

1946: Was affected by Gandhaian Philosophy of India.

1946: Began composing poems in Nepali language.

1946: Began formal education from Tri-Juddha High English School, Biratnagar, Nepal.

1948: Began writing novels, long poems and short stories in Nepali, but did not publish.

1950: Served as a volunteer in the Revolution of 1950, under the leadership of the Nepali congress.

1950: Learnt Magar language, one of the TIbeto-Burman speeches of Nepal. Began creative writing in this language also.

1951: Entered Nepal Communist party in search of better humanitarianism. Began studying Marxism.

1951: Began publishing creative and other articles in Nepali magazines inside or outside Nepal.

1952: Obtained a Matriculation certificate from Banaras Hindu University, U.P., India.

1952: Began publishing translated and original booklets.

1956: Started Jharrobadi Movement from Banaras (India), a linguistic purism for safe-guarding Nepali language from unwanted foreign influence.

1957: Left Marxisn and determined to remain aloof from the party politics.

1960: Obtained a first class M.A. (in comparative linguistics, then called comparative philology) from Calcutta University, West Bengal, India.

1961: Played a role of one of the Founding Members of Mahendra Ratna High School, Rupatar, Udaypur District, Nepal.

1961-1990: Joined academic service under Tribhuwan University, at first an Assistant Lecturer and ultimately a Professor.

1963: Was offered a gold medal (Mahendra Vidhya Bhooshan) from the late His Majesty Mahendra.

1963: Obtained an inspiration reward from the Ministry of Education, Nepal.

1963:Was awarded Ratna Shri medal from the distinguished hands of Her Majesty Queen Ratna.

1963: Awarded Madan Puraskar, the only literary award established till then, Madan Puraskar Guthi, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1973: Obtained an M.A. in Nepali literature with the First class first position and gold medal thereunder, Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

1979: Voted in favour of Multi-party democracy in the Plebiscite in Nepal.

1979-1989: Guided many P.HD. scholars and other research-scholars under Tribhuvan University, Nepal.

1979-1984: Became member of Royal Nepal Academy, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1983: Participated in the international seminar on the occasion of the second centenary of the birth of the science of language, organized by the Asiatic Society of Bengal, India.

1986: Represented Nepal in All India Nepali Language Seminar, North Bengal University, West Bengal, India.

1987: Obtained Pratibha Puraskar, a literary award from Pratibha Puraskar Pratisthan, Biratnagar, Nepal.

1989: Re-entered Nepali Congress (N.C.) Party after the gap of 39 years and entertained the active-membership. Believes that till now there is no other party as an alternative of N.C.

1993: Obtained Aseem Puraskar from Nepali Shiksha Parisad, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1994: Honoured by charioteering and Biratnagar Sub-Metropolis (then merely a Municipality), an initiative taken by Silsila (Biratnagar) in the presence of the Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.

1995: Was awarded Tribhuvan Academic award from Royal Nepal Academy, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1996: Was selected Life member of Royal Nepal Academy, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1996: Was awarded Udayananda Award from Udayananda Smarak Samiti, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1997: Was awarded Jhapat Award from Jhapat Puraskar Vyavastha Samiti, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1998: Was selected Honarary Member of Linguistic Society of Nepal, Kathmandu, Nepal.

1998: Propounded a new discipline, Kassology, by publishing a long-awaited book in Nepal, Khas Jatiko Itihas (i.e. History of Thraco-Kassite Race).

1999: Was selected an Advisor of NECA, Nepal Culture Academy, Kathmandu, Nepal.

2000: Falicitated and Greeted by Shiromani Pustakalaya, Chandani Chowk, BIratnagar.

2001: Obtained Vidhyashiromani Award: Late Badagurujuyu Hemraja Pandey Puraskar Guthi Award Committee, Kathmandu.

2001: Busy in editing, compiling, writing and computerizing creative works, Nepali-English dictionary and Genealogical work on my own Pokharel clan (in epic from supported by generation-marking figures and charts).

2001: Is always of the opinion that politics is not a scare-crow of the creative writing or fine-arts. Even then thinks that neither of the two should minimize each other.
